FEATURES

Integrated fixed-lens design

The integrated fixed-lens design extracts maximum performance from the powerful large-aperture F2 lens, and combined with the 61.0-megapixel[FN|Approximate, effective.] 35mm full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R™ CMOS image sensor and BIONZ XR™ image processing engine, delivers excellent descriptive performance from the centre of the image to the periphery.

Full-frame 61.0-megapixel[FN|Approximate, effective.] Exmor R image sensor

The back-illuminated sensor's noise reduction, gapless on-chip lenses, anti-reflection optical coating, elimination of the optical low-pass filter that is usually positioned in front of the sensor and other original technologies deliver high resolution, high sensitivity, low noise, and wide dynamic range.

Powerful BIONZ XR image processing engine

The latest BIONZ XR image processing engine minimises processing latency while markedly boosting movie and still image processing power. The BIONZ XR image processing engine helps to deliver natural gradations, realistic colour, low noise, and generally superior image quality while fast, stress-free menu response is maintained regardless of the real-time processing load.

Superb resolution and beautiful bokeh

The top-quality single-focal-length ZEISS® 35mm Sonnar T* lens has been meticulously designed to achieve the full optical performance potential of the camera’s fixed-lens design through micron-level optimisation of the positioning of the lens and its focal plane, delivering the high resolution and beautiful bokeh that a full-frame system is capable of.

Macro shooting

The macro ring on the lens barrel allows quick switching between normal and macro modes. And although the lens is remarkably compact, in part thanks to an internal focus system, it has a minimum focus distance of just 20 cm with 0.26x maximum magnification for impressive close-up and macro performance. The ability to move in close and capture minute details offers greatly expanded creative possibilities.

Lifelike colour

The high processing speed of Sony’s latest image processing engine and the AE algorithm make it possible to detect facial skin areas and automatically adjust exposure for optimum brightness and tone, even when the face is backlight, in strong direct sunlight, or facing sideways away from the camera. The advanced algorithm not only ensures excellent skin tones, but also reproduces the natural colors of the sky and foliage with lifelike fidelity.

Creative Look

Twelve Creative Look presets are provided, including three film-style looks, and can either be used as they are or customised via eight adjustable parameters. The presets provide a wide range of variations with different combinations of colour, colour depth, brightness, contrast, and sharpness. The effect of the eight adjustable parameters, including contrast, saturation, shadow and others, can be viewed in real time on the camera display. Customised Creative Looks can be stored for later recall and use.

Instantly switch between three angles of view with Step Crop Shooting[FN|Not available for movies.]

The Step Crop Shooting function allows switching between 35mm (60 MP), 50mm (29 MP), and 70mm (15 MP) equivalents with a simple one-touch operation. Even when you can’t approach the subject, you can shoot at 70mm equivalent while maintaining a high resolution of 15 MP[FN|For images shot in the RAW format using Step Crop Shooting, cropping information is recorded in the image metadata, and the image itself is recorded with a full-frame angle of view. When you play back the image on the camera, it is played back with the cropped angle of view.].

High sensitivity, low noise

The high-performance image sensor in the RX1R III offers a powerful combination of Sony’s most advanced technologies, featuring outstanding light-gathering efficiency. It offers a standard ISO range of 100-32000[FN|When [Image Stabilization] is set to [OFF]. ISO 100-6400 equivalent when [Image Stabilization] is set to [Active].] for both stills and movies, expandable to ISO 102400 for stills. Dynamic range at lower sensitivities is an impressive 15 stops[FN|Sony test conditions. For stills.] that translates to smooth, natural gradations from highlights to shadows.

Human pose estimation technology

The RX1R III performs human pose estimation using the innovative AI processing unit. Learned human forms and postures help to recognise not just eyes, but body and head position with high precision. This makes it possible to accurately lock onto and track a wide range of subjects, even if they are facing away from the camera or wearing sunglasses or a helmet, for example.

Reliable Real-time Tracking[FN|[Tracking] in the menu. Based on advanced artificial intelligence, including machine learning.]

If the subject cannot be recognised or subject recognition AF is not turned ON, Sony’s original subject recognition algorithm will process colour, pattern, and spatial data to reliably acquire and track the subject. If [Touch Tracking] is engaged, touching a subject on the monitor selects it for tracking. A custom button assigned to [Tracking On] allows a selected subject to be temporarily tracked regardless of the focus area setting.

A wide variety of subjects accurately recognised

The AI processing unit supports [Human], [Animal], [Bird], [Insect], [Car/Train] and [Airplane] recognition[FN|Available subject settings are: Auto, Human, Animal/Bird, Animal, Bird, Insect, Car/Train, and Airplane. Subject types other than the type specified may be erroneously recognised in some cases.]. The same wide-ranging subject recognition is provided for stills and movies, and an [Auto] mode simplifies operation by allowing the camera to automatically select the subject type[FN|When Auto is selected the camera will normally recognise the subject type automatically, but the wrong type may be selected in some situations. In such cases manually selecting the intended subject type may solve the problem.]. The [Auto] mode reliably takes care of subject selection in most cases, leaving the user free to concentrate on composition and shooting.

Wide, high-density AF reliably captures subjects

The high speed of the BIONZ XR processing engine and the latest processing algorithms result in significantly improved AF performance. 693[FN|For still images. The number of points varies according to the shooting mode.] phase-detection points in a high-density focal plane phase-detection AF system cover approximately 78% of the image area when shooting stills. Accurate focus is achieved even when the subject only fills a small area of the frame. Sony’s Fast Hybrid AF system combines the speed and tracking capabilities of phase-detection AF with the precision of contrast AF.

4K 30p video recording (QFHD: 3840 x 2160)

Video can be recorded in 4K resolution at a 30p[FN|Recording frame rates are indicated as the closest integer values. The actual corresponding frame rates are as follows: 30p: 29.97 fps, and 120p: 119.88 fps.] frame rate, or at a high frame rate of up to 120p[FN|Recording frame rates are indicated as the closest integer values. The actual corresponding frame rates are as follows: 30p: 29.97 fps, and 120p: 119.88 fps.] in Full HD. Active Mode image stabilisation provides shooting stability, and the S-Cinetone™ picture profile is available to give a cinematic look.

Accurate AF in low EV -4.0 light

The latest AF algorithms achieve high AF precision down to light levels as low as EV-4.0 in AF-S mode (ISO 100 equivalent). AF is precise and reliable even in low light.

Compact and lightweight

With a compact body that fits in the palm of your hand at approx. 113.3 x 67.9 x 87.5 mm (approx. 4 1/2 x 2 3/4 x 3 1/2 inches) and weighing only 498 g (approx. 1 lb 1.6 oz), the RX1R III is highly mobile and ready to be taken anywhere, to shoot whatever and whenever the mood takes you.

Shoot longer indoors or out

The compact RX1R III runs off an NP-FW50 rechargeable battery pack, shooting up to 300 images[FN|CIPA standard. Using the LCD monitor. 270 images when using the viewfinder.] on a single charge. It also has a USB Type-C® connector that supports USB Power Delivery (PD)[FN|A USB PD compatible power supply device with 18W (9V/3A) or higher output capacity and a USB Type-C cable that can handle 3A or more are required.] for fast charging from a compatible PD power supply.
